Normal Distribution of Random Errors

0.0 mm
1.0 mm

The normal distribution of random errors. Drag μ to shift the mean — errors should be centred on zero (a non-zero μ suggests systematic error). σ controls spread — larger σ means less precise measurements. The inflection points occur exactly at ±1σ. Australian survey standards (ICSM Positional Uncertainty) use 95% ≈ ±2σ.
